1. International Family Mediation

Family mediation, in Ivory Coast is commonly implemented and encouraged by the State, but it is not legally recognised. Family mediation is not a professional activity.

1) Ivory Coast is not a Party to the 1980 Hague Convention.

2) Ivory Coast is not a Party to the 1996 Hague Convention.

The 1996 Hague Convention: a multilateral treaty which covers civil measures of protection concerning children, parental responsibility and contact, children's property, public measures of protection or care and matters of representation.

You can determine whether countries relevant to your case are Parties, or not, to The 1980 Hague Convention on International Child Abduction and/or The 1996 Hague Convention on Child Protection in order to locate the appropriate central authority. As for the 1980 Hague Convention, you can check whether the Convention is in force between two specific States in the Spreadsheet showing acceptances of accessions to the Child Abduction Convention.

The Ministry of Women, Child Protection and Solidarity (ex Ministry of Solidarity, Family, Women and Child) provide social services including family mediation to couples who address themselves to them or who are directed by the guardianship judge. The Association of Women Lawyers of Ivory Coast runs six legal clinics in San Pedro, Guiglo, Man, Bouaké, Korhogo and Bondoukou providing information and guiding families free of charge (website in French).

4. Child Welfare Services

The Directorate of Judicial Protection for Children and Youth of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights has judicial protection services for children and young people, which includes mediation in separation and divorce ordered by judicial decision (guardianship or family depending on marital status). Dignity and Rights for Children in Côte d'Ivoire (DDE-CI) is a non-profit organisation that deals with special attention to vulnerable children (website is in French). SOS Children's Villages in Ivory Coast offer Family Strengthening Programme to protect children who are at risk of losing the care of their family. SOS Children's Villages in Ivory Coast help children providing monthly food kits, health support, school scholarships, single donations, and support with setting up self-help projects in three locations: Abobo Gare, Aboisso, and Yamoussoukro.

Caritas Côte d’Ivoire is working on human rights and the protection of vulnerable children from exploitation via a project that combats the worst kinds of child labour in the cocoa growing sector (website in French).

5. Support to Bi-National Couples, Cross-Cultural and Migrant Families

Ivory Coast is a country of migration and as a result, bi-national couples are very numerous. As regards support for binational couples, no association presents this "specialisation" but all associations work with them to a certain extend.

Caritas Côte d’Ivoire is working on human rights and the protection of vulnerable children from exploitation via a project to reintegrate repatriated Ivoirians and providing assistance for Liberian refugees in Côte d’Ivoire (website in French).
